REFINED SUGAR
POSITION SOUND IN AUSTRALIA The position regarding refined sugar supplies is now sound, said the. chairman, Mr E. R. Knox, at the annual meeting of the Sydney Colonial Sugar Refinery Company. All orders for some time past had been executed promptly and a considerable reserve' had been built up throughout the Commonwealth. The demand for refined products was growing and had. been considerably accentuated by abnormal buj'ing by householders laying in stock. During the summer this year more than 50,000 tons of refined sugar had. been supplied in excess of that delivered in the previons summer. Ml- Knox: said that the Australian output last year was about 721.000 tons compared with 783,000 the prcvjous year. The reason for the decrease were: the Queensland Government's; decision to discourage the manufacture of excess sugar. The effects en the crop of unfavourable weather conditions; the labour shortage and restricted supplies of fertilisers.
