YOUNG SOLDIER'S SENTENCE
THE MATATA CASE
Thomas Leslie Daley the 25 year old soldier who in conjunction Avith another man returned from overseas stole £150 from the clothes of a civilian who had befriended them at Matata on March 26, was sen-i tenced by Mr Justice Call an, in the Supreme Court, Auckland.
Daly said the other man had blamed him, but that was not true.
His Honour replied that the other man, Andrews, had been found guilty of receiving, and had been sentenced, on the assumption that Daley was the ringleader, to twelve months' hard labour. Now Daley said he Avas not the ringleader, and it would be assumed by the Court that he was not, but his o/Tcnce of theft was a worse -one than Andrews' offence of receiving, and the prisoner would be sentenced to two years' hard labour.
