UNITED NATIONS DAY
OBSERVANCE ON SATURDAY
FLAGS TO BE FLOWN LOCALLY
In a special communication to the Mayor, the Prime Minister Urged that an effort be made locally to observe in fitting rneaslure the United 1 Nations Flag Day on Saturday next.
The communication was read at last Monday's meeting of the council, it being pointed out that the observance would be an Empire one, and that in other parts of New Zealand the event would be marked by military parades and displays.
Discussing the subject, councillors maintained that the 1 time for arranging such ceremony was exceedingly short, even, for a simple ceremony. There was little more could be done than to fly the Hag from the Borough mast and invite business premises to do the same. The Deputy Mayor said he would like the council to. consider the purchase of some new flags—observing naively "we'll need them soon to •decorate 1 the town, we- seem pretty well on the road to. victory." The clerk mentioned that flags would prove expensive items just now, but that the council possessed a few together with some banting. Cr Creeke: I'd like to see a flag on the top of the Rock. We have a natural land mark there and don't seem to make the best use of it. Fo.r events like this we should have a prominent pole. Cr Caisley: There used to be a telephone pole up there once. Getting back to the subject Cr Armstrong said he felt certain that the Home Guardsmen would sooner do useful training than undertake a parade. It was agreed to do nothing than to fly the flag as above mentioned and to invite shopowners to do likewise. Cr Shaplej 7 however was not to be weaned from his flag suggestion and on his motion the Finance Committee was instructed to go into the matter of purchasing new emblems.
