STILL KEEPING UP

THE HOME GUARD SPIRIT

M A.I OR lIKR ROLIT S CONG R'ATU-

LAT I ONS

"I congratulate you all on today'sl performance," said Major Herrold, when ad'dressing the assembled Home Guardsmen who paraded on the show grounds at the conclusion of yesterday's

manoeuvres. "It is extremely gratifying to see that the old Home Guard 1 spirit is still keeping up, and I can only hope that you continue to go on with: your training in the same enthusiastic manner as in the past.

After apologising for the absence of Colonel Aldred, Avho was once again prevented from being present by a prior engagement, lie said that it had given him extreme pleasure to see the 'stunt' which had been put on. There had been mistakes made, but in this type of manoeuvre there were always many mistakes made. Nobody however could, be. expected. to. learn anything unless they made mistakes and' profited by them. The general spirit of those taking part was exceedingly line and it was this aspect which he placed most emphasis on. It was the: good old H.G. spirit which had come through so many adversities. He did not wish to make any fresh promises, as he recollected how many of his in the past had failed to< materialise. However he understood that overcoats were now at the railway station and that the first 700 uniforms! were on the way.

He complimented both the Whakatane and Rangitaiki Battalions on being able to put 500 and 300 men on parade respeetiA^ely.
