OFFICIALDOM AD LIB A TAURANGA EXPERIENCE Instancing the manner in whichi officialdom had run wild' in this country Mr F. W. Doidge, M.J. for Tauranga, told the conference of local body representatives yesterday that the Tauranga Hospital Board had had occasion to< apply to the placement officer for -the services o-f a gardener to maintain the grounds. A man had been forthcoming, but Avas so l hopelessly unsuited tor the work that his services were 1 dispensed., with. ! A few days later a, letter from the placement officer demanded to know the reason lor his dismissalHie board, .considered) it unnecessary to. answer the letter. A second letter than arrived stating, that Unless a reasonable excuse for the man's dismissal was forthcoming the board would be called upon to pay his wages for the whole of the time he had been out of work. A third letter threatened action to recover this sum. "This of course,'" said Mr Doidge, is Bumbledom in the ex- j treme, "but it just shows where some * of the; public money goes."
