OBITUARY

MR A. L. DONALDSON

In the death of Mr Allan Lamb Donaldson, which occurred: last Monday, an interesting link with the earlier days of Whakatane has been severed. Born at Peterhead, Scotland 72 years ago, he left home for Australia wheal but a. boy of fourteen years'. The trip was made 1 in one of the sailing vessels, and port was: made in Northern Queensland, "'where, he lost no time in securing the posi-. tion of boundary rider on a large sheep and cattle station. After seme years he came south to< the rising town of Bundaburg where he was employed on a substantial sugar plantation. The late Mr Donaldson remained in that town for 16 years, marrying there and then coming over to New Zealand. His first position in this country was in a sawmill owned: by the late Mr McLeod ef Masterton, with whom he remained for .10 years. About this time the family made a trip Hbme and. revisited their relatives | in Scotland. On their return they settled ait Matawai but came north to Whakatane 26 years ago. Mir Donaldson was first engaged on constructional work in .connection with, the Freezing Works. Later he entered the employ of the Borough Council ultimately becoming inspector. He retired a few years ago an<l lived quietly in his: home in Victoria Avenue. He was. known for his quiet and friendly nature ana his readiness at all times to assist and toi co-operate" in anything making for the general welfare. He will be missed by a. wide, circle of friends who held him in the highest esteem. He is survived by his widow and an only sen Allan of Whakatane. TANE HAURAKI One of the local chieftains in the person of Mr Tane Hauraki died at Ruatoki on Monday last. Hei was widely respected by Pakelia and Maori alike and held the positions* of chairman of the Ruatoki Patriotic Committee andi the Ruatoki School Committee. Aged 76 he was one of the old type l of native for whom the early settlers had' such a high regard. He leaves a widow but no children. The tangi is now in. progress and is being attended by representatives of all the Bay of Plenty tribes.
