OFFICERS RATE INCREASE CLERK DECLINES RISE The question of salaries was discussed in committee) by the Whakatane County Council last Tuesday when it was finally decided to increase the salaries* of the following officers as under: — Mr Tomkins, Acting County Engineer, £500. Mr Carling, Inspector, £3SO and £20 uniform allowance. ■ Mr S'teiwart, Collector o.i Native Rates, £341. It was moved further that at Mr Lucas' request his salary remain at present figure. Prior to its retirement into committee the council reviewed the new rates of pay instituted under the extend'ed work programme (54 hours weekly) which are now received by P.W.D. employees. These were as under:— LABOURERS (2/9 per hour) £7 8s 6d per week plus 5s cost of living bonus. Which 1 gives a rate per annum of £399 2s. SURFACEMEN (2/10 per hour) £7 13s per week, plus 5s cost of living bonus —rate of £410 16s per annum. TRUCK DRIVERS (five ton) 3s per hour, £8 2s per week plus 5s cost of living bonus —rate per annum £434 4s. In addition to the above half an hour is allowed for 'warming up' time at ordinary rates which brings the yearly total to £457 12s.
