SOUGHT Writing the Wbakatane County 'Council the Commissioner of Transport stated that he had been, advised lay the No. 1 District Licensing Authority that an enquiry was held into the. operations of taxi-cabs in the Whakatane district, and that although sufficient evidence was not : -.available to< justify any action being taken as regards the taxi-cab licenses, the operators were warned that any convictions for illegal selling of liquor would' result 'in a review and possibly .cancellation of the respective license. The LLcens- • ing Authority had the advantage ol : a report from the police when giving consideration to the matter. In connection with the same subject, the Commissioner also repliec to a previous letter from the comi - cil, advising that > the matter of the -character of drivers of motor omnibuses had not the same important as the character of taxi-cab driver; owing to the more personal servicc given to the* public, by the latter It is considered that the employing firms should! Be l able toi control 1 th( character of its drivers sufficientlj without any special provision in th< regulations. Also, possibly the polict would be quite willing to provide ; Teport on the character of any ap pliicant when requested to do so bj the local authority. The council decided in future tha ,'police reports be obtained on all ap plications for omnibus drivers' b -censes.
