A ROYAL TRIBUTE
AS Monday will be regarded in all but essential industries a statutory holiday it is appropriate that some attention bo directed to its origin. It is usual to refer to it broadly as the King's Birthday but in actual fact this is not correct, for the ruling Monarch's birthday occurs in December. The observance of June Ist. as the royal anniversary is due to a graceful tribute of our present King to perpetuate the. memory of his beloved father whose birthday fell as thousands recall it, on June 3rd. At George the Sixths personal request the nation has observed his father s birthday instead of his own since his accession. The modification to-day is that the nearest Monday to June 3rd is regarded as the royal birthday in order to facilitate the long week-end and to save breaking into the working week.
