SWALLOWED CAUSTIC CRYSTALS SAD OTAKI'RI ACCIDENT An eighteen months old boy, Riki Rangi Naran, the son of sharemilkers working for Messrs Revell Brothers of Gtakiri, died in the Whakatane Hospital asi a result of having swallowed a quantity of caustic soda crystals which he had evidently mistaken for sugar. At the inquest which was heard before Mr G. Brabant, district coroner, evidence was given to the effect that on. Friday] last, the boy climbed into the scat of a • truck in which a small quantity of the soda had been temporary placed in a cup. His evident distress was noticed a few minutes later by his parents who lost no in rushing him to hospital. Evidence was given by Dr. Dawson and Sergeant Farrell. The coroner returned a verdict that death was caused by pneumonia and heart failure following an inadvertant dose of caustic soda swallowed by the child itself.
