A Dog's Life One of the most surprising incidents of last week's storm is now related and concerned a English setter who was chained to a shed which was unroofed. The chain which led to the kennel was attached to one of the beams which was lifted bodily over into a neighbouring property. When his owners discovered him next morning the dog was sitting on the top of a hedge with about three inches of free chain. How he was uninjured in his aerial flight remains a mystery. No Stock Drives "There should lie no stock drive for patriotic purposes, for most stock is mortgaged and the farmer in this position lias no right to give away mortgaged stock," said Mr D. Stewart at a meeting of the Hawke's Bay County Council, when the question of a stock drive was under consideration. "It is easy enough to give away what doesn't belong to you, but no one should be asked to," added Mr Stewart. The stock drive plan, however, was approved by the meeting. Victory Potato' A freak potato, the shape of a V has been grown in Opotiki by Mr S. D. Abbot. This remarkable potato has caused much comment in the town, and Mr Langley, a representative of Messrs John Duthie and Co, Auckland, who noticed! the potato, has taken it to Auckland to show the agents who supplied the seed what their potatoes are doing for the victory campaign. The potato, which is of the Sutton Supreme variety is a large- one, and Mr Duthie said that he considered it a good omen when even potatoes entered so whole heartedly in the "dig for victory campaign."
