Sir, —The following items' of news in regard to places which are much talked about to-day, may be of interest to your readers. They are taken from a Gazetteer of the World except that referring to New Zealand.: i Madagascar, a French colony, area 241,094 square miles, population 3,621,342, products, cattle, hides, rice. ! coffee, bananas, coconuts, rubber, cotton, gold, graphite, sulphur. Malay States, formerly Dutch, including Java, Sumatra. Borneo, Celebes, etc. area 733,296 square miles, population 60,731,025. Products, rice, maize, sugar, coffee, tea, tobacco, palm oils, spices, rubber, petroleum tin, etc. Philippine Islands, a group of about 2000 islands, area 114.000 square miles, population 12,604,100. Products, coal, iron, coppcr, gold, dyewoods, rice, maize, tobacco, coffee, cotton, hemp, coconuts, cigars and pearls. New Guinea, including Bismarck and Solomon Islands, formerly German possession, area 93,000 square miles, population 740,000. Products, copra, timber, gold, pearls sandalwood, tortoise shells. New Zealand, area 103,722 square miles, population a. little over I*4 millions.
