MAINTAINING CONTACT

WIIAKATANE'S position as far as Rugby is concerned is far removed from the fortunate situation of both Rotorua and Tauranga in which centres large military camps have bee?i established. In spite of this drawback it is pleasing to note the effort which is being made locally to 'keep the ball rolling' by way of resurrecting the local union and endeavouring once more to field a representative team. The successful accomplishment of this feat will be something ox which we may feel genuinely proud for well over a thousand young men have already been drawn from this district and either by voluntary enlistment or by ballot the .Rugby finest players have long since left. But it is chieliy in deference to those very men that the local Rugby executive feels it must keep contact by holding the competition open season after season in order to have the right to challenge and play for the celebrated Hurunui Shield. More strength to these die hards whose enthusiasm for the grand old game cannot be dampened by war, or invasion threat. Something about their attitude reminds us very forcibly of a certain incident in the life, of b!luff Sir Francis Drake of Elizabe.then days.
