WHAKATANE GREENS WEEK-END PLAY The usual Saturday afternoon draw on the Whakatane Bowling Club's greens resulted as under: — O'Rourke, Drube and Francis 30 beat Jackson, Boon and Chambers 12. Murphy, Bridger and Creeke 22 beat Butler, Bell and Shaw 15. King, Hcaley and Heßyar 22 beat Wilson, Berg and Tippett 12. Grace, Bennett and Bigelow and Baxter 22 beat Shapley, Smith, Butler Snr. and Hollis 17. Junior Stars Bennett, Darvill (holders) 24, v Jackson, McKenzic 12. Bennett, Darvill (holders) 21, v Grace, O'Rourke 16. Smith Stars The following were contests for the Smith Stars: — Salmon. White, Grant, Currah (holders) 20 v Darvill, Pearson, King. Howat 16. Salmon, White, Grant, Currah (holders) 13 v Henderson, McLeod, Francis, Hayward 26. Salmon leading from Currah proved to Darvill he was no shrimp in fact with, mouthfuls of kitty gave an imitation of a shark. Pearson in this game got hard wear from White. King produced some aces but these were torpedoed by Granty's battleships. Howat, with schoolboy exuberance, drove and smashed right and left, mostly driving, little smashing. This had no illl effect on cool as a cucumber Currah. Nemesis was lying in wait in the next game when Hayward's team were unbeatable, winning the season's final star ralch McLeod spurred on by brilliant play and gratuitous advice from his lead (Henderson) never failed. He left White's bones at the 4th head. Francis, unperturbed by the navybowls from Paroa was in classic form. Hayward displayed surprising strategy and the general play of his team had a freezing effect on the cucumberness of his opponent.
