RACING NOTES

A SOLID PERFORMANCE | The Do foe representative, De Friend, put up a very solid performance to carry 11.10 and win the Morningside Steeplechase., of two and a half miles from start to finish. He jumped very capably throughout and his pace enabled Mm to win by a good margin. His win has brought him into favour for the Great Northern, but. in the interval lie may be a contestant in the Egmont Steeplechase on Saturday. He was bred and is owned by Mr E. N. Fitzgerald, of Gisborne, who has gained much racing fame principally with the aid of the champion, Kindergarten. SUCCESSFUL AS A HURDLER The Hunting Song gelding, Mendelssohn, could not be termed a real success on the flat, but bids fair to be quite a payable proposition over the battens. At Paeroa in March he ran a good second to Stokowski, and the jumping experience thus gained enabled him to win. FINISHED VERY LAME Gaine's Choice, after falling at the double in the first round of the Steeplechase, was very lame, and when brought back to the birdcage was practically a cripple. A SURPRISE One of the surprises of the fixture was the forward running of Young Paddon in the Mt Eden Handicap. The field number over twenty, and although not well placed in the early running he displayed a lot of speed in the run to the post to finish third to Sure Pay and Dinky Di. His placing denoted that he may be difficult to beat Avhcrt the tracks become heavy again. MAY NOT BE LONG By their forward running in the Autumn Handicap it would appear that it may not be long before Foxsen and Radiant Vaals again have their names on the winning list. Both can handle clamp going, so this is a point in their favour for winter racing. SHOULD SOON SUCCEED In the Waitakere Handicap, with 21 competitors, the, Matamata entrant, Hinkler, looking a bit above himself, was 17-16 in order of favouritism. He ran a good race with 9.3 to run third to Rara Avis 7.7 and Kinstep 8.0. The place: dividend was quite an appreciable one for Matamata investors who are never likely to let this Hinkler go unsupported.
