CULTIVATING MORALE
REGULAR SOCIAL EVENINGS A.N.Z.C. PROPOSAL Realising that the main object ive of the Awake New Zealand Campaign is to raise the morale of the people by bringing as much as possible, the true facts of the present war position, the local committee at its meeting last Wednesday decided to initiate a series of socials on Sunday evenings. A tentative programme submitted to the meeting provided for an hour and a half's programme commencing at 8.30 p.m. It included; besides selected items (a) Speakers who woukl deal with the progress of the Campaign in Whakatane, (b) Rapid review of Home Guard activities by Company Commanders, (c) Community singing, (d) The tuning in for the two minutes silent prayer from Daventry at 9 p.m. (c) War commentary by local commentator, (f) Extracts from letters from local boys overseas, (g), (h) Devotional, suitable hymn, (i) Patriotic , songs, "Land of Hope and Glory," "There'll Always be an England," and "God Defend New Zealand," The whole idea of the gathering was to further the cause of the 'Awake' Campaign and to cultivate the spirit of 'realism' with regard lo the facts as they face this country at the present time. The committee was unanimous in supporting the suggestion which it is hoped will be a>.so carried out in the country districts should the initial moves be successful. A small, sub-committee was set up to 1 promote the first evening on Sunday 22nd of May and to make enquiries as to the availability of the King Street Hall.,
