Joan Gi'ibcrt, acknowledging a letter from. Africa in one of her Gibraltar programmes,, commented on (lie marvellous stamps on the envelope, and told the sender that they had. made others in her office green with envy. A listener ia South Africa promptly sent her a packet of South African stamps, and in acknowledging, these on tho air, Joan loV.i her listeners that she was sending them to the BBC Stamp Club for sale in order to swell the funds which maintain the BBC's own hostel in a distressed area in Northern England. Since then, listeners from all over Africa have joined in, and Joan has so far raised nearly £2.
