E.P.S. Bulletin The New Zealand National Service Department has inaugurated an EiP.S. Bulletin, following the example of the Commonwealth and State Governments in Australia. It is intended that monthly issues wil! be available for senor members oi the Emergency Precautions Services throughout the Dominion. The main purpose of the publication is a liaison service between the department and local organisations of the E.P.S. and each issue will contain articles of importance.
Transport Licensing Authority A special sitting of the No. I Transport Licensing Authority will sit at the Whakatane Courthouse on Wednesday next at 10 a.m.. A fairly substantial list is set down for hearing. Scout Commissioner's Visit Notification has been received by the local Scout Committee that the Dominion Commissioner, Mr 11. Cooksey, will be visiting the Bay of Plenty centres next month. His itinerary will include Whakatane on May 11, Opotiki on May 12 and Onepu on May 9. Arrangements will be made locally to enable Scouts and parents to meet the Commissioner.
Anzac Day Golf The Whakatane Golf Club informs members that the coursc will be closed on Anzac Day until 1 p.m. and there will be no competitions in the afternoon. Loss of Missionaries in China "Twelve missionaries of four nationalities are known to have been slain by military bombs or bullets in China," records the Methodist Times. "Numbers of others have lost their lives by expo-sure, and the violence of bandits, in which war was a factor." Patriotic Maize Last year's maize grown in the Borough of Gisborne for patriotic purposes has yielded a profit of £125, which has been paid to the East Ccast Provincial Patriotic Council. The maize was grown on an area of about 12 acres last year, and it is estimated that the yield averaged SO bushels to the acre. Rats and Overdraft Referring to the manner in which rats destroyed stored maize during the winter, Mr C. R. McCready at the conference between growers and Internal Marketing officers last Wednesday said that although the maize was getting chewed away, the overdrafts at the bank were not. It would be alright if the rats would even up a bit and chew something off the- farmers' overdrafts. Ban on Aliens ( Regulations gazett.ed provide that aliens are not to purchase land, take a mortgage over land, c>r lease land for a period of less than three years without the consent of the Minister of Justice. The term "alien" is defined as "any person deemed to be an alien within the meaning of the Aliens Emergency Regulations, 1940." The ban also applies to aliens purchasing, mortgaging, or leasing land under the provisions of a will, and they are also prohibited from taking an option to purchase land as well as being prevented from making actual purchases. Innocents Aboard He was one of a party on a fishing launch out from Whakatane and bent on getting the best of an adventurous trip. Fishing was poor, but, no t to be lie declared himself bent on having a dip in the briny—cold wind or no. Then and there like the soldier off the ferry in Auckland, he 'peeled off' and bravely plunged in» The horror of his companions was awakened when it was seen that he had scooped! in a couple of mouthfuls and the shock to the kidneys had paralysed the lower limbs. With sea chanties and other useful windlass tunes they hauled him aboard and comforted him with flagons.
