NEW YEAR'S ESTIMATES EXTENDING ALARM SYSTEM At the annual meeting ol.' the Whakatane Eire Hoard Mr S. S. Shapley was. re-elected chairman. Other members present were Messrs F. B. Cutler (Borough), R. A. Wilson (Insurance), J. Crceko (Government) . Mr M. Cummings who is at present serving with the armed forces was given leave of absence for the duration. The secretary (Mr D. V. Saunders) submitted estimates for the incoming year amounting to £(>5<L To meet this the sum of £sf> was shown as carried forward; £50 will be found by the Government and £275 each by the Borough and the Insurance Companies. The P. and T. Department advised that as soon as sufficient wire was obtained steps would be taken to extend the alarm system by the installation of a further six call boxes. The Superintendent drew attention to the fire hazard within the Borough arising from the existence of areas of dry grass. He requested that steps be taken to have this risk alleviated.

The Board decided to write the Borough Council urging that vigorous measures be instituted.
