Criticism of Water Supply j A recent letter appearing in the, 'Beacon' apparently stirred some re-J sentment in the mind of Cr A. J'.. Canning, who at last Monday's council meeting said that ratepayers should know that the council was doing its best with regard to the institution of a better water supply. It was impossible to effect improvements at the present time owing to the difficulty ol" supply while the installation of a purifying plant to -safeguard against flood discolouration was beyond the borough's finances. Xmas Card From Germany Mrs L. H. Madcley of White Pine Bush, has received a greeting card from her brother, Gnr Colin Ansel!, who is now a prisoner of war in Germany. The card is designed by hand —probably by a fellow prisoner and, is dated December 17th from Stalag VIII.B. It contains the following verse: — Xmas Greetings: A little picture to express, My wishes for your happiness A little message from my pen To haste the day we meet again. God give you every Xmas cheer And joy throughout the coming year. Tar Sealing the Strand

Inconvenience to motor traffic in the Strand will be unavoidable during resealing work, read the Borough Foreman's report to the council last Monday evening. As the council knows owing to war conditions a substitute bitumen has to be used which will require careful for at least 7 days to ensure success. May I suggest that a request be made to motorists using the Strand in the next fortnight for dead slow speeds with judicious starting and braking. The council decided to adopt the suggestion and motorists are therefore asked to cooperate.
