OUR SOLDIERS OF TO-DAY
"A SOBER LOT"
LIBERTY AND MODERATION -
New Zealand soldiers of the present war have Avon a great name for themselves, both for their dash and daring in battle and for their good behaviour wherever they may be. Police officials in the Dominion have described our fighting men as "a sober lot." However, human nature being what it is, there are bound to be exceptions here and there where unfortunately the privileges- asociated with the public sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages are abused. It is a traditional British privilege to choose our own food and drink within the bounds of the law; but excessive and illegal drinking are an abuse of that privilege, whether it is a ease of soldiers or civilians. "Hold fast to liberty" is the phrase that finds instant response among all Britishers. The liberty to drink what we wish and to. enjoy friendly contacts and relaxation is something precious to a majority of our people. Do not abuse that liberty—be reasonable, be moderate.
