GOLF OPENING

THE WHAKATANE CLUB

MANY VISITORS ATTEND

On Saturdaj' afternoon the Whakatane Golf Club opened its 1912 season, a large number of members and visitors being present. In his address the president, Mr L. W. Lux ton, referred to the absence of many members on military service, and expressed the sympathy of the club with the relatives of those who had lost their lives on active sei'vice.

The course, said the president, was now in better condition than ever and the committee would make every effort to maintain it so until better times returned. He urged the members to co-operate by continuing membership through the difficult period. The course l was then opened by the president driving from the first tee.

A Canadian Foursome of nine holes was played, the best cards returned being Mrs Winstone and Bullartl 31 net, Mrs Kennedy and Moore 33 net, Mrs Spence and Syme 33 net. This competition was followed by afternoon tea and more golf, completing a very happy social gathering.

Next Saturday a four-ball bestball competition will be held for the men.
