SHELTFR FOR CHILDREN

TRENCHES AT SCHOOL EIGHTY VOLUNTEER 'DIGGERS' The recent appeal for volunteer workers to assemble at the Primary and High School grounds for the purpose of digging shelter trenches for the children met ■with a good response last Saturday when over eighty 'diggers' representing every class of occupation, trade and profession performed prodigies of strength in the excavation of straight and slit trenches. Luckily the ground on the main was soft and sandy, but there Avcre those unfortunate enough to strike distinctly hard patches Avhich dreAv quite a liberal share of "super 11 nous" and at times not a few expletives. On the primary grounds the trenches Avere formed against the laAVsoniana hedge Avhich surrounds the grounds. This Avork Avas completed in the morning Avhen forty-three workers assembled Avith shoA r el and spade. In the afternoon the zig-zag trendies for tlie senior pupils at the High School Avere commenced and by 4 p.m. these had likewise: been cxcavated to the required depth. The appearance of these Avas quite business like. Members of the W.W.S.A. provided morning and afternoon tea which was most welcome while a prominent citizen also "came to light" at the conclusion of the job. There still remains a number of trenches jet to be dug in the A'icinity of the bandroom, Avliicli is also used b3 r the children and these it is hoped Avill be handled next Saturday by a further band. The Avork Avas supervised by the Borough Foreman, Mr W. Henderson, Avho Avas present throughout the day.
