UNLAWFUL CONVERSION
TE PUKE TRUCK REMOVED
ACTION BY MAORI
The conversion of a truck which was being used for war purposes, to his own use, resulted in Ernest Ihaia, a young Maori being arraigned l before the Whakatane court last Wednesday on a serious charge. Messrs G. A. Brabant and G. R. Kent, J.P.'s, were on the bench. Sergeant Farrell said that accused was engaged in driving the truck at Tc Puke and had decided to do a little tripping on his own account. The vehicle was valued at £301) and with it Ihaia disappeared over the week-end finding his way to WhnUatane and generally moving about the country. When arrested he freely admitted his guilt. The Sergeant stressed the seriousness ol' the case pointing out that Such action might have had very far reaching results in view of the work which was undertaken by the truck. Accused was sentenced to two months' imprisonment in the Mt, Eden gaol.
