Now that the council's, protests have been noted by the City papers and given publicity therein, I feel more hopeful and hasten to lend what little weight I have into the scale. One point I wish to make in regard to this very serious question— do< the people o.f the Bay rea.\'fce what the conditions of life will be, here, in twenty or even ten years if the present trend continues? Remember, the Maori is increasing at twice, or more, the rate of the pakeha. The East Coast branch of the N.Z.E.I, prophesies a colour problem'. Might we noit have that and something worse? It is high time that our people wakened up and expressed a definite opinion on this matter. Doubtless most folk will throw all responsibility upon the police, and go their way: but this will not clear them. The responsibility is c.n us and will remain there. Since the police cannot possibly be in two or three places at the one time it is the simplest matter in the world to carry on this illicit trade. But it must be stopped and if, unitedly, we demand its abolition it will be abolished. Yours etc., H. HOGG, Child Welfare Officer.
