AMAZON BATTALION

MOVEMENT AT ED GECUMBB ,

INDEPENDENT UNIT

A movement is afoot at Edgecum* be to form an "Amazon Battalion/* to be composed of women wliot were prepared to learn something of the use of arms, in order to be able tot defend themselves in an emergency* The move is probably unique in? New Zealand to date but quite pos~> sibly may set a precedent which will! be followed in cither districts. Its is to be understood that it is quite independent of any existing organ-* isation and cannot be officially linked with the Home Guard. The idea of training women up to some gree self defence, in spite of the limited weapons available, is a span-* taneous reaction to the possibilities which may confront this land andf is therefore readily understandable, in spite of the hereditary revulsion; felt by most Englishmen at the! thought o f women folk becoming embroiled in warfare of any typev The first muster of women interested in this unit has been called for this evening and will take place at Bell's Hall at 7.30. An officer of the Home Guard will be present to explain the official position of the guard towards the movement.
