In a statement the Minister of National Service said the classes of men called up in the ballot released on Wednesday were (1) all members of the first division who had not yet been called lip by ballot; (2) all marvied men without children who had attained the age of 18 but nlcifi 16 years, and 5 who had not been called in a ballot and (3) married men who had attained the age of 18 and not 29 years, with children. Appeals for postponement of service, said llie Minister, required to be posted or delivered to the nearest manpower committee on or liefore April -1. In future, he said, the committees woukl adopt a ino.rc rigid attitude with regard to appeals, and any received after the expiry of the prescribed 10 days after the reservist was called in the ballot would not be considered unless it could definitely be established that failure to lodge such an appeal was due to a mistake or other substantial reason which precluded earlier lodging. Mr Scmple said in these grave rind anxious days it is of the utmost urgency that men be drafted into the Army as soon as possible. With the 1 threat of a Japanese attack relatively minor inconveniences, both from the domestic and employer's point of view, must be forgotten. Apart from men in urgent and essential wca-k and special cases of domestic or personal hardship a tendency for postponement of service should be avoided. The men were wanted for the Army quieklv.
