SANDHILLS FIRE
PLANTATION'S NARROW ESCAPE
BURIAL GROUND DISTURBED
The fire which swept the scrub-land across the harbour last Tuesday night stopped as if ■ by a miracle on the edge of the main pine plantation which runs for half a mile along the tongue of the sandspit. Some of the smaller plantations were burnt, but the body of the trees was spared by a freak of wind which! bore the flames away only a dozen yards distant from the 1 trees. The Maori burial ground was swept clean, and some concern was expressed by local elders at the exposure of the plots. It is thought that wind and rain action may have a disturbing effect upon flie graves and protective steps are under consideration.
