SPECIAL CONDITIONS NEEDED
A man 7ft Gin tall offered himself for enlistment in the A.I.F. at Melbourne Town Hall and tlie recruiting ofi'icer did not khoav what to do with him. To giA'e them time to ponder, they handed him over to a sft to take particulars—Aveight lS.st 91b. chest (ilin, expanded fJSin, aged 3"> and sound in Avind and limb. Still the recruiting officers Avere at a loss. His hat, boots, uniform and all his equipment Avould have to be specially made, they said. An ordinary rille Avould lie of no asc to. him —he Avould have to be built a special blunderbuss. And any officer giving tlie order, "For inspection port arms," Avould haA'e to be given a step-ladder to carry it out. Every time he Avalked along a trench he Avould haA'e his life in his hands. .And if he AA*as Avounded he Avould Avant a special stretcher and a special bed in hospital. They referred the application to higher quarters.
