ELDERLY MAN INJURED
TROUBLE IN HOTEL BAR CHARGE OF ASSAULT Umu Kumara, labourer, aged 27, Omaio, appeared before justices at the Opotiki Police Court charged that lie did assault John Gunther causing him actual bodily harm. Accused was arrested by Constable W. A. Rathie. Messrs J. T. Merry and C. Pipe were on the Bench. Sergeant J. Jsbister prosecuted and stated that the accused was a returned soldier, suffering from shell shock and was deaf to some extent. He was in the Masonic Hotel on Friday drinking in the bar and had some sort of an argument. It was alleged that the accused pushed Gunther who struck his head on the skirting board around the bar as he fell. Gunther suffered three seal]) wounds and had to be taken to hospital. The doctor would have to take an N-rav to find out the. extent of the injuries. Sergeant Jsbister asked for a remand. Mr Hei appeared for accused and said the accused's mother was present. There would be difficulty on the farm in carrying on without him. He. would not mind if the remand asked for were longer. He would like to know if the police would object to bail being granted. The father had been ill for the last two years and the mother was not strong enough to do the milking. Sergeant Jsbister informed the Bench that the offence was a serious one and might be even more serious. The accused was remanded in custody till next week.
