E.P.S. AND HOME GUARD
NOT DISPROPORTIONATE
DENIAL BY SECRETARY
In rebuttal of the remarks
made in our leader column on Friday last we have been informed by the secretary of the County E.P.S. personnel was being built up at the expense of the membership of the Home Guard were completely without foundation.
It was claimed in other districts that the E.P.S. outnumbered the Home Guard by. ten to one. This absurd situation could not apply to Whakalane, said Mr Lucas where the final figures would not be more than 365.
Against this the Guard could, he said, parade something, like 1300 men twelve months ago. Added to this fact the E.P.S. had actively assisted to advertise and popularise
the Guard at its inception. Later when the personnel of the E.P.S. required to be built up, it was impossible to have suitable men released from the Guard for certain important types of work.
