FINES AT LOCAL COURT
At the local court yesterday when Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., was on the bench, Harold Barclay Avas charged Avith being found drunk in a public place, to wit, Te Teko, and was fined 10s Avith costs 10s. A similar charge Avas preferred against hru Rcwiti and the fine Avas 10s with the costs 15s.
The latter offender was also charged Avitli a breach of his prohibition order and Sergeant Farrell stated that this was the second breach. On that charge he was fined £5 with costs totalling £1 7s.
Tai Taylor was also charged with a breach of a prohibition order, the Police stating that he had committed the offence on four occasions during the past twelve months. He had been prohibited since 1919. Mr C. A. Suckling appeared for the defendant entering a plea of guilty and asked for leniency on the grounds that Taylor had enlisted with the Maori Battalion and was shortlv to enter camp.
The Magistrate pointed out that the man's record was a bad one and he imposed a fine of £5 with costs 15s.
Another resident of Tc Teko was also fined, Noka Rawiri, being charged with assisting with the offence of supplying liquor to a native. Constable G . Thomassen gave evidence to the effect that he had found the defendant in the hotel j-ard carrying a number of bottles of ale. Rawiri had stated that an European had obtained the liquor for him but refused to give the man's name. He was fined £2 with costs £1 13s.
