RAGWORT ERADICATION
POSITION ON NATIVE LANDS
The Native Department, Rotorua, Avrote to yesterday's County Council meeting adyising that the matter of ragwort eradication has been referred to the Department's Field Supervisors in charge of the Development Schemes affected. It is stated that under present day circumstances and AA T ith the shortage of labour particularly, the control of ragAvort on areas that have not been brought Avithin. the operations of Native Land Development is a very difficult matter to contend with, but it is assured that everything possible Avill be done to clear any infestation that, at least, appears to be a direct) menace to adjacent cultivation. Unoccupjed Native lands not within the jurisdiction of Development is a matter for the Waiariki District Maori Land Board and as soon as it can be ascertained what lands affect the development administration, it Avill endeavour to have the position remedied. In the case of unoccupied lands not coming Avithin the provisions of- Part 1, 1936, of the Native Land Amendment Act, the Maori themselves are responsible and notice should be serA r ed on them to see that the infestation is removed, failing Avhich the council's remedy is an application to the Board to> take steps to have the land subjected to a control that will operate to the desired end.
