A SATISFACTORY 'BLACK-OUT'
Danger of Fire The County Council yesterday resolved that the Whakatane Paper Mills be requested to take immediately remedial measures which would remove the possibility of engine sparks starting fires. E.P.S. Expenditure The County Clerk reported at yesterday's meeting that most avenues of E.P.S. expenditure would be subsidised by the Government, £2 for £1, and it was resolved that all other than small or usual E.P.S. expenditure be firstly approved bjr the chairman of this committee and the Controller.
IT is pleasing to note that the inspection of the town's 'black-out' from the sea,, by a number of wardens, has led to the official o.k. The result speaks well for the officials whose duty it is to maintain the effectual screening of all lights visible from the sea. This work has been carried out in business and residential sections and it would now appear that the general effect is completely satisfactory.
Leave for Duration At yesterday's meeting of the County Council Mr B. T. Dodds applied lor leave for the duration of the Avar to enable him to serve with the Royal Ncav Zealand Air Force. He asked that leave could be granted as from the 31st March or thereabouts. Actually this would embrace an additional month or two months special leave. It was recommended that the council convey to Mr Dodds its best wishes and that he be asked to defer his departure to the 30th April, from which date he be given leave of absence on full pay for one month, and thereafter leave of absence.
