ANOTHER BOOKMAKER LICENSED
PUBLIC attention has once again been directed to a second local bookmaker's appearance in court in Whakatane, when the annual 'license fee' this time beat all records and was entered to the tune of one hundred pounds. The studied farce of prosecution was duly carried out once more with details of the raid and the amount of betting material discovered on a premises which had already been raided several times before. With, every semblance of ponderous justice the court heard the case, issued the usual empty warning and imposed the: fine. If there ever was a flaw in our justice code it is surely in the application of our Gaming Laws. While not blaming the bookmaker, for his permanent contempt, we do nevertheless level the charge of condoning, if not actual connivance:, against the administrators of the law, and would once again urge that the whole wretched system to legalised and given the light of day as in other countries. Such a measure would make for cleaner and healthier investments and less straightout fraud.
