WELCOME RAIN
FALL TOO SHORTLIVED
THIS YEAR VERY DRY
Wednesday night and Thursday morning brought welcome rain to the parched pastures surrounding Whakatane, but unfortunately the fall ceased too soon, and farmers were disappointed that a steady and lengthy downpour did not ensue.
This year is very dry in comparison with last year when for the same period the fall recorded by the local observer, Mr H. Muscutt,. was 10.51 inches. This j r ear only 1.44 inches have fallen. O'n Wednesday night the recording was .24 inches and yesterday .30 inches. The total for the month is .62' while for the same term in 1941 the reading was .33 inches. Plains Parched Mr Andrew McLean of Edgecmnbc reports that during the past 24 hours .38 inches of rain fell and this constitutes the only rain of the month. In January the recording was .74. The fall recorded at Edgecumbe since November 1 totals; only 4.66 inches. As a comparison, in 1939 from February 1 to April 20 only 1.03 inches of rain fell, but in that year the dry spell was preceded by a good fall at the end of January.
