SCOUT WEEK
NEXT WEEK-END OBSERVANCE
LOCAL PLANS PREPARED
The approaching week-end will be observed by Scout organisations throughout the Dominion as a special period for furthering the interests of the organisation and especially in building up the numerical strength of the movement.
Originally it was intended to spread the activities over three days (Friday, 'Saturday and Sunday) but Dominion Headquarters decided that !n view of the 1 war situation and the growing concern regarding the Pacific situation to limit tlie programme to two days only. The local committee has therefore confined their efforts to Saturday and Sunday only.
Saturday's Programme
On Saturday Scouts, Guides and Cubs will parade to the waterfront adjoining the Strand, for the purpose of demonstrating the 'good deed' which figures so prominently In. the. Scout code. A joint effort will be made to clean up the seafront, by raking and burning th«> rubbish under the control of their leaders, and cutting the tall grass. Ft is hoped that the Guides Avill bo able to co-operate by building some rock gardens and effecting their planting with flowers. Afternoon tea for the assembly will follow, provided by the committee, after which all will be invited to go for a swim and to participate in one or two swimming races.
On Saturday evening;, there will be a special Scout, Guide and Cub rally in the Parish Hall, to which parents will be invited. An hour and a half's programme will be devoted towards games and demonstrations by each of the three sections. The evening will conclude with a light supper.
Combined Church Parade
By special arrangement with the ehurclies, a special parade and' service in the Caledonian Hall, will be held in the early afternoon. All units will, march to the hall headed by the Boys' Band. Again an open invitation will be extended to adults, citizens generally being invited to show their interest in the movement. The service will be conducted on the lines set out by the Dominion executive which lias described the day as an occasion for 'Dedication and Memorial Day.' The day is- the anniversary of the birth of the founder, Lord Baden Powell., and also of Lady Powell.
It is hoped to make the* parade and the scrvice an inspiration to all who attend.
More Scouts Needed
The aim of Scout Week, is to treble the roll, if possible and thus achieve the dream of His Excellency, the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, the creation of a Scout force numbering 50,000. At the present time New Zealand can boas! only 16,000 scouts. In spite of. the difficulties already confronting the movement, it is felt that Whakatane can play its small part in encolling more and more boys in its own splendid little unit. Scout week Affords this opportunity.
