MILES OF FLAME

SCORCHED SANDHILLS

HUNDRED SETTLERS FIGHT FIRE

BI.AZE AT THORNTON

Breaking out in the lupins on the coast near Thornton fire razedi growth from over 500 acres on Monday and seriously threatened adjoining farm lands. No stock or buildings were lost but some miles of fencing was destroyed 1 before a band of over 100 settlers beat the flames brack.

At its height the fire was an awesome. sight with flames leaping to great heights and extending for a great distance. When first noticed to be getting cut of hand the blaze extended for about a mile and stock was rapidly removed to safer pastures. Assistance was readily forthcoming for those settlers whose properties were threatened and before long Home Guardsmen and settlers numbering over 100 were vigorously fighting the lire. The fire fighting organisation which was directed by Home Guard officers was very efficient and farmers whose property Avas saved are greatly indebted to their friends, and neighbours for their timeh r assistance.

The blaze was seen from all over the Plains and created no little consternation amongst residents until

it Avas learned that it was mainly confined to the coastal lupins.

The origin of the fire is unknoAvn
