ACTION OF A SPORTSMAN The stakes won by High Caste in a dead-heat with Mildura amounted to £450, and this sum was immediately donated by the owner, Mr Harry Tancred, of Sydney, to the Red Cross. BAY OF PLENTY CLUB There were rumours last week to the effect that the Bay of Plenty Jockey Club would not hold its March meeting this year, but as a matter of fact no decision has yet been made. At present the Gate Pa course is used for other purposes. BRILLIANT JUMPING Melvanui, winner of a hurdle event at Ellerslie last month, has since been jumping brilliantly in his tasks over the battens. Evidently he has taken courage from his New Year victory. BACK IN THE SADDLE New Zealand's premier horseman, W. J. Broughton, is back in the saddle after three months' suspension from riding. Naturally he will put forth strong endeavours to register victories in the near future, and by July 31, the end of the racing season, lie will again be found hard to beat.

A JUMPING ASPIRANT The Waverlev owned Lord Cavendish, a performer of merit on the flat, has now joined Alf Wright's team at AVanganui, where he will be put through a thorough preparation in view of big hurdle events in the winter. OFF THE SCENE The Canterbury Cup winner. Wardress, troubled with lameness at Trentham and has nciw been allotted a lengthy spell. The trouble is in the feet and is considered serious. OUT OF HACKS The Champ, who earlier in the season registered meritorious victories, but whose performances at E'llerslie were only of a moderate nature, has now run out of the hack class, and will race in open company in the near future.

McDougall, of Wairarapa, owner of Happy Ending, and purchaser at the National Sales of the Bulandshar—Roman Scandal colt will have the latter trained at Riccarton bj>- Fred Jones. RE-COMMISSIONED Innes Lad, who has been off the scene this season, is again the work at Te Rapa. A very capable jumper, with his share of pace he is likely to add to his winning list in due course. OFF HIS FEED Route March, winner of the Auckland Railway Handicap, was very solidly backed for the Telegraph Handicap at Trentham. He was prominent in the early stages, but weakened in the last furlong. It afterwards transpired that he had been off his feed for two days! and this would naturally account for his non-success. But he will see better days.

A SPEEDY ONE The winner of the Wellington Telegraph Handicap, Autolite, is a five j'car eld baj- mare by Autopay from Lucidity by Lucullus—Disease. So far she has won eleven races, so can at least be termed useful . A NEW ZEALAND CUP WINNER Sercnata, winner of the 1940 Ncav Zealand Cup has returned from Australia. She was not successful on •"the other side" her best effort bein£ a second to Aristocrat in the Warwick November Handicap. LEADING TWO YEAR OLD The Bulandshar—The cult. Nizam, winner cf the.
