1 o consider the best means for ! he protection of school children against enemy action a Protection of School-children Committee of the Wellington E.P.S. was set up some time ago, with the chairman of the Wellington Education Board, Mr W. V • Dyer, as chairman.
A detailed report was prepared on natural shelter and protection, and steps considered necessary for Uie safety of children and buildings in an emergency. The recommendations have now gone forward lo the Education Department for consideration. the board having received a notification that no expenditure on E.P.S. work [ must bo. incurred without the department's approval. As far as possible schools will make the fullest possible use of natural shelter, but where none is offering, slit trenches or sxirJ'aee trenches have been recommended. The recommendations also include the provisions of fire-fighting and iirst-nid equipment and small stocks of tinned milk and biscuits. ft is suggested that head teachers should be appointed sub-wardens ii>. '.he E.P.S. aid should familiarise themselves with the details of the scheme in the districts.
Other recommendations include ! the grouping of children according to the zones in "which they live or the route by which they would reach them, - emergency drills for speedy exit from buildings, and quick marching to< homes or places of safety, classes for senior pupils in elementary first aid, the training ol' teachers and senior pupils as firelighting squads, and the provision of identification labels bearing the name and street address of the wearer. Other recommendations refer to transport of children, what to do in a sudden bombardment, billeting of children, and the provision of firefighting material.
