Overcome by Heat Heavy mortality occurred among several mobs of sheep being driven down the E!ast Coast road to the Kaiti freezing works at the end. of last week, states the Gisborne Herald. Four mobs containing 3600 sheep encountered the very hot weather towards the end of the week, nnd matters were made worse by the absence of drinking water along a long stretch of road. I± is estimated that between 20 and 30 died, and many others were in an exhausted condition. Many were picked up by passing lorries, and trucks were sent from Gisborne to> bring in many that would obviously have failed to reach their destination alive. Arrangements were made for immediate killings in order, as one man expressed it, to save their lives.
