Captain C. H. Brebner has-been In Whakatane for the past few days.
Older residents of Whakatane disfrict will be interested to read that Mrs Laura H. Sheat, who for a number of years lived at Thornton, celebrated her 77th birthday last ivcek with a gathering of friends and her family at her home in Mount Albert, Auckland. Mirs Sheat came to this district 27 years ago, her husband, the late Mr Alfred Sheat, being one of the first settlers to take up land on the Rangitaiki Plains after the Lands Department had started its land draining undertaking. Still enjoying excellent health, Mrs Sheat continues to do good work in her home and her neighbourhood.
The new member for the Bay of Plenty, Mr W. Sullivan, Whakatane, who was returned at the by-elec-tion held last month, has spent the pajt week in a hurried tour of the electorate. Mr Sullivan proceeded to Gisborne via the Coast scienic. route, spending two or three nights on the road. He was able to meet a large number of settlers in various localities and to become better acquainted with their problems ant! with their district. He spent Friday in Gisborne and in the evening was out in the adjacent country areas, returning to Whakatane on Saturday. The new member has planned to make a more comprehensive tour ot' that side of the electorate in the near future.
