ANNIVERSARY DAY HOLIDAY
Sir, —Surely Whakatane shops and banks will not close up on Thurs* day, January 29th because there are races on in Auckland under the guise of Anniversary Day! Can you enlighten us as to whether such holidays are to be cut out now that the enemy is now almost at the gate? A pronouncement by our Chamber of Commerce would do much to encourage the all-in war effort. Yours etc., FIDDLING NERO.
(The position regarding the holiday and its observance locally was the subject of discussion at a meeting of the Retailers' Association last Tuesday evening, when it was uiW*~ animously decided to close, following the leads given by Auckland and Tauranga. It was pointed out at the meeting that certain anomalies existed if the shops remained open, for under certain awards it would be necessary to pay workers double time while: others received no recognition by way of extra pay. Owing to these circumstances the matter was more or less out of t,he hands of the Association, members of which decided to follow the coursc which appeared fairest to' all concerned. Ed).
