THE BLACK-OUT
CONTROL IN THE BOROUGH
G ENERALLY S ATI SFACTO'RY
At a meeting of the Whakatane E.P.S. Committee last Thursday evening the Controller of the Works and Warden Section reported that excellent work was being done by the Reduced Lighting Wardens. Twenty men were engaged upon patrol of the 10 zones within the Borough and had reported, that in general, occupiers showed a keenness to comply with the black-out requirements. Some occupiers had the erroneous idea that the restrictions did not apply toi windows and lights not directly visible from the sea, but all lights displayed contributed to sky glow which could indicate the locality of the Borough. As indicating the keen and enthusiastic work being performed by the Lighting Wardens, Mr S. S. Shapley instanced the case of a local baker who, on commencing work at 3 a.m., had omitted to draw the blinds at his premises. A Warden was quickly on the scene when the omission was rectified. The numerous windows at the Whakatane Hospital present a blackout problem of some magnitude. The controller of the Medical Section, Dr E. T. Dawson, advised that active measures were in hand to comply fully with the reduced lighting restrictions.
