BELATED CABLEGRAMS
JOURNEY TAKES OVER A MONTH
EXTREME LOCAL CASE
An instance of the extreme belatcdness of cablegrams l'rom the Middle 1 East is provided by Mr R. Wilson, of Whakatane, whose son, Pte Doug Wilson, was recently reported Avounded. In order to allay any coincern of his behalf, Doug, as soon as he was in hospital cabled home to the effect that he was doing well. The message left Egypt on December 12th, and Avas by his parents last Wednesday, four and a half Aveeks after its despatch. In the meantime, surface mail lines had brought ordinary letters from him, over tAvo Aveeks ago, telling of his experiences and how lie came to be Avounded. Another case of the drastic need for an overhaul. Yet another instance is reported from' Opotiki, Avhere the folloAving cablegram, despatched on 10th December, Avas received by Mr G. A. DaAvson from Pilot-Officer Jack Haeusler, Avho is serving overseas: "Christmas: greetings to you and all friends." Mr DaAvson did not receive the cablegram until Monday (January 12th), the message having taken oA'er a month to reach its destination.
