FLOOD PUMP NEEDED

LAND DRAINAGE ON THE PLAINS THORNTON FARMERS NEEDS About half a dozen farm owners in the Thornton district are joining forces to instal an electric floodpump with a view to discharging flood water into the dredge canal during the wet months of the year. A site at the junction of the canal and the Massey Drain has been chosen, ami negotiations are proceeding with the Power Board and the Lands Department. It is understood the pumping scheme' w T ill cost landowners about £1 an acre for the installation and about 3/- an acre for annual costs. In view of this burden on their finances the people concerned hope to get their land reclassified so that they will; not have to pay such high drainage rates as the higher land nearby which does not have to be pumped dry.
