HOW ITALY ANNEXED LIBYA

NOW that she has all but been driven out of Libya, it is interesting to note how Italy came by this, her North African possession. Briefly, because she refused to recognise the Italian occupation of Tripoli in 1911, Italy declared war on Turkey, a country already weakened as a result of the first Balkan wars. The war continued in a half-hearted fashion till October 1912, when an agreement was reached after several weeks negotiation. The outcome was that Italy agreed to maintain the law and full and entire sovereignty over Libya. Turkey on the other hand agreed to neither recognise nor question Italy's sovereignty, but to simply ignore it. Surely a most singular and astonishing bit of diplomacy, which becomes the more obscure when both sides agreed to neither pay or to claim an indemnity.
