Bridges and l "Tank Traps" The Public Works Department recently renewed the stringers and decking of the bridge over the drainage canal on the highway near Thornton. No doubt this was routine maintenance work carried out not before its time. However local Home (iiiardsmen discussing the job seem to think it might lie part of a national defence scheme to make all bridges on highways strong enough for '"lank Iralfic" in the event ol the Army being called out to .protect Whakatane from Axis invaders. On the other hand the bridge in its former state of disrepair jnight have been a- splendid "tank trap"' to check the advance of an invading for:-e.
