WOMEN ON BUSES
TRAM MEN PROTEST AN UNMIXED BLESSING Although Melbourne's conductresses have shown their mettle in handling buses on their own, they are not an unmixed blessing for conductors. Because the women can be employed only in metropolitan depots, the men are being sent to outer depots, with the result that they have to travel long distances toi get to and from work. As there is no petrol, they have to ride bicycles early in the morning and late at night after a day's work. A mass meeting of men, held to protest against the employment of women in buses, also discussed action on the Tramways Board's decision not to meet a deputation froan the union on the employment of conductresses and other matters.
