EASTERN TRADE
PLENTY OF SHIPS AVAILABLE
According to Captain Rush worth there is no shortage of shipping for trade between New Zealand and the East. One of the heads of the Netherlands East Indies Navigation Company said in the course of a discussion of reciprocal trade possibilities: "We have 160 ships running, and of these only two travel to and from New Zealand. One of these is to be taken off for lack of trade. If business is there we can supply the ships," he added, "but we want the cargo, and wc expect reasonable expedition at the ports."
Captain Rushwortli was shown the ship's manifest, from which it was seen that only comparatively small cargoes were being carried on the two Dutch vessels, and to collect even this quantitj' the ships had to call at various ports with length}' delays at each.
